Bringing Back The Lynx To The British Countryside
How do you fancy seeing this beautiful animal back in the wild. The British lynx, closely related to Northern European lynx, dissapeared around 700. Now there are many who want it back. Reintroductions into other European countries have been a remarkable success, with the best managed programs constructing whole new eco-friendly industries such as wildlife tourism around their presence, breathing new economic life into remote rural communities. Cumbria is one of the areas under consideration.
If like me, you to would like to see this lost treasure back in our countryside go to the The Lynx UK Trust, a group of expert feline conservationists specialising in wildlife reintroductions and take the survey. Its very interesting reading and very interesting that among those saying yes include farmers - good for them.
Sunday 26th April - Grange over Sands Prom Art
April sees the start of the Grange Prom Art Fair. Held on the beautiful Promenade, overlooking the Morcambe Bay, there are some 70 stalls offering an eclectic mix of paintings and drawings along with arts & crafts such as jewelery, live woood turning and pottery. There are food stands and the Prom Tea Rooms by the old Lido. The event is enlivened with live performance, which in the past has included jazz bands and belly dancing.
The Fair is held on every last Sunday in the month up to and including Sunday 27th September.

Friday 13th - Visit To Cockermouth
It had been a long time since we last went to Cockermouth and I confess I had forgotten what a super little town this is. The reason for going was to attend the auction with our friend Mel, and having bagged a couple of supposed 19th C Spanish oils, we set off for lunch and a walkabout.
Lunch was at Tarentela on Main Street. I had the Insalate di fegato di pollo, a warm salad of chicken livers, very delicious and at £6.50 a steal.
After we strolled around the town. A mix of lovely buildings, brightly coloured giving a Mediterranean feel, the shops an eclectic mix offering everything from shoes to interior design, fish (we bought some, fresh as fresh can be) a proper veg shop and a wonderful Iron Mongers.
We walked over the bridge that spans the fast flowing river and spent some time in the Castlegate House Art Gallery. Specialising in 20th century British and contempoary art you can see the likes of Sheila Fell, Percy Kelly, Geoffrey Key, Carel Weight and Ken Howard, along with promoting young new talent such as Jessica Pigott and Alex Haine.
Owners Steve and Christine are a delightful couple, passionate about art and are happy for people just to visit with no pressure to buy, although we could not resist a purchase of one of the younger artists work. I am no expert but if you collect what you like then have a look at Alex and Jessica,s work - I think they are both quite special and will become quite sought after.

Clare & John Serginson
During our early careers in the advertising industry, based in London, we loved coming to the Lake District to refresh and recharge. The contrast between the buzz of London and the serenity and sheer majestic beauty of The Lakes and mountains was a real tonic, with long walks during the day, simply taking in the landscape, returning to a cosy cottage or hotel for the evening.
In 1993 we decided to move to the Lake District for a whole new life, with an idea of creating our own cottage agency, one different from others, one that would offer visitors an exceptional experience, where quality not numbers mattered.
We hoped our skills, John a still life photographer and Clare an art buyer, would benefit home owners and holidaymakers, presenting the properties in an exciting manner, along with lots of information about the area, its attractions and just why, like us, once visited you to will fall in love with this unique part of England.
A short guide to choosing just the right holiday home to suit you needs.
