Holidays in Windermere

Self-catering holiday accommodation in Windermere

The town of Windermere did not exist until a train station was built in 1847 in the township of Applethwaite. The station took its name from Birthwaite, the nearest farm. As time marched on, the new village prospered and villagers began calling it Windermere, much to the annoyance of the people of Bowness-on-Windermere, the nearest village to the lake. Today, both are under the same local authority, but are separate geographic places with much to encounter.

Windermere town itself is very scenic and many walks leave directly from the town centre. One of the best fell walks for beginners in the Lake District, Orrest Head, starts and ends in the town, which makes it perfect for a light refreshment after a walk. The lake of Windermere is twenty minutes walk away to the nearest shore point.

Our Windermere cottages have the best of both worlds, with walking and sailing nearby, you’ll be sure to experience all that a Lake District holiday can offer. And in our guide to Lake Windermere, you’ll find even more things to see and do around the beautiful nearby lake.
