Situated in a charming and secluded location within half a mile of the banks of Ullswater, this traditional former miner’s cottage has been imaginatively updated to offer cosy and welcoming accommodation for two. This idyllic getaway makes a wonderful romantic retreat, features stunning views across Ullswater and is set in a pretty wooded enclave visited by a variety of birds and red squirrels. Dating back to the mid-19th century, this comfortable and relaxing stone-built property makes a wonderful bolthole for a couple discovering this spectacular part of the Lake District.

Situated at the end of an unmade woodland track, the cottage features a fresh and inviting open-plan pitch-pine beamed lounge/kitchen/diner. This charming living space is equipped with a traditional wood burner, an AGA-style oven, exposed beams and beechwood, and butcher’s block work surfaces. A small dining table divides the lounge from the kitchen. A short staircase leads to a light and tasteful double bedroom with underfloor heating. The lawn is shared with the neighbouring property and offers glorious views across Ullswater.

This delightful property is set in a beautiful, elevated location overlooking the Glencoyne valley, in the shadow of Sheffield Pike fell which leads up to one of the highest points in England, Helvellyn (5.5 miles by foot). This is a fabulous area for walkers and climbers of all abilities, or you could head to Ullswater and take a trip across the lake by steamship. Nearby, at the foot of Kirkstone Pass, is the pretty village of Glenridding (1.5 miles) which has a variety of friendly pubs and restaurants. Other local attractions include the Aira Force Waterfall (2.5 miles) and the Lake District Ski Club (3.5 miles by foot). Also nearby are the picturesque village of Patterdale (2.5 miles) and the bustling market town of Keswick (15.5 miles).

Simple perfect- cant wait to return and sincerely hope the owners will consider swapping the double for a king size bed? That would truly make for a luxurious and spoiling stay!

The cottage is beautifully decorated, and in an absolutely wonderful location for local walks. There is some discomfort, however, in that the heat from the Aga can overpower the small house. Luckily we had a cool August week, but still needed to open doors and windows just to cool the cottage down, and couldn't use the wood burning stove. Lovely cosy cottage great views and in a quiet spot we think it's better for a quieter Place than the other lakes to stay but be wary of the rough track up to property we had a 4x4 but smaller vehicles could get damaged if your not careful.

The Aga was great to cook with. The downside however is that it generates so much heat the cottage felt a little too warm. The bath shower attachment was a little poor. We dont want this to distract from the quaintness of the cottage and the stunning location.

Great location, beautifully located, in fact perfectly located. Great for dogs and amazingly quiet. The dark sky is spectacular. The cottage itself, whilst compact is finished and fitted out very well indeed and was very clean.

It's a beautiful cottage, in a beautiful location. The perfect place to escape for a get away. There are lots of walks you can do straight from the cottage, and you can see Ullswater from the drive away. My only comment would be make sure you bring enough walking clothes if that's your plans for your trip as there isn't a washing machine.

We were recommended by a friend to rent Red Squirrel Den and we had a marvellous week. The location is stunning. The cottage is compact but well equipped including a reasonable internet connection (around 10 mbs). The full sized Aga is a bonus.
