Introduction

 

A stylish and cosy cottage right in the heart of the popular village of Cartmel, 2 minutes away from the famous and significant 12th century Augustinian Priory, with which the cottage has a special relationship. This is as a result of a small piece of monastic masonry embedded in the wall, which was gathered from the Priory grounds at some time in its history, thereby giving the Cottage its grade 2 listing. Having started its life as a shelter for farm animals, for the house next door, the building was extended upwards and more recently outwards, to create the comfortable 3 bedroom cottage that welcomes you today.

 

A spacious sitting room, dining area and sunroom are located downstairs, along with the kitchen, a study/reading room area (including storage for coats & boots and stairs to upper floors), downstairs toilet and utility room. The master bedroom and en-suite bathroom, a twin room and the shared bathroom are on the first floor, with a charming attic bedroom on the second floor.

 

Pre arrival

  • The nearest bus stops (in both directions) are 0.2miles away from the property, at the top of The Causeway, heading left towards Cartmel village centre.
  • The cottage is situated on a relatively flat, small, narrow, quiet road.
  • The nearest train station, Grange-over-sands is 2.6 miles away - there are taxis outside the station, but it is advisable to pre-book. One local Taxi Company is Road Runner – 01539 33792.
  • The nearest main airports are Manchester and Liverpool which are approximately 88 miles away 

 

Local facilities

  • The cottage is around 300 metres from a small general shop (the Spar)
  • A takeaway café and the Pig & Whistle pub are around 500 metres from the village square.
  • Unsworth’s Yard – home to Cartmel Cheese & Bread, HOT wines, and the Cartmel Microbrewery is only a few minutes walk away, adjacent to the Priory
  • There are various tea and coffee shops in the village centre, including Cartmel Coffee, as well as the Cartmel Village Shop – home of Cartmel’s famous Sticky Toffee Pudding.
  • Cartmel Racecourse, which has 8 meetings a year (also home of the annual Agricultural Show) is 5 minutes walk away.
  • The nearest supermarket is in Milnthorpe 12.4 miles away and is a Booths (our Northern Waitrose). There are others in Kendal 15 miles away – Asda, Morrisons, Aldi and Booths.
  • Grange-over-Sands, 2.6 miles away, has a wonderful, nationally acclaimed butcher, Higginsons (great pies and quiches etc.), a great greengrocer and other food shops, cafes, hardware, some clothing, trinkets and a lovely handmade chocolate shop - Choco Lori.
  • There are three other pubs in and around the village square. The Cavendish Arms (recently modernised gastropub), The Royal Oak and the Kings Arms, as well as the Priory Hotel.
  • L’Enclume restaurant, just a few minutes walk away, has been voted the UK’s best restaurant for the 4th successive year in 2016.  It has Two Michelin Stars & Five AA Rosettes. Rogan’s  restaurant – also owned and run by Simon Rogan and his team, is just next door.
  • The Priory is just 2 minutes walk up the road.

  • Details for access to the property are provided by The Lakeland Cottage Company once a booking is fully paid
  • Whilst the property does have its own parking space, access to this space is currently problematic  (when cars park opposite). Planning is being pursued to change this. Parking is generally available on the next door road, called The Causeway (turn left out of the property and you will see the the Causeway 100 metres away).
