Bowness-on-Windermere (5.5 miles) sits on the western banks of Lake Windermere. It has an array of independent shops and eateries on offer, as well as the opportunity to take to the water on a variety of vessels. On the eastern side of the lake, Sawrey and Hawkshead are popular with visitors because of their links with author Beatrix Potter. Heading north, you can visit delightful Grasmere (5 miles), a bustling village famous for its gingerbread. Ambleside itself is also teeming with outdoor activities, including Go Ape, and a wealth of walking routes.
