Nestled below the Old Man of Coniston where you’ll find walking routes for all abilities, this pretty cottage promises a peaceful escape to guests. Sleeping five across three cosy bedrooms with views over Coniston Water from the main bedroom, this property is ideal for use as a base to relax in after a long day out exploring both Coniston Water and Lake Windermere (9.5 miles). Take a ride on the National Trust’s Steam Yacht Gondola across Coniston Water (1 mile) or hire canoes or kayaks from Windermere Canoe and Kayak (14 miles) and go paddling for the day.

Leave your coats, boots and hats in the hall and step through to the bright and airy kitchen/diner that blends the traditional and the contemporary perfectly. Shaker-style cabinets paired with stylish pendant lighting creates a sociable space, while rich dark woods and red tones in the lounge invite you to curl up on the sofas in front of the wood burner after a day of exploring. At bedtime, snuggle into bed in one of the tranquil bedrooms; wake up refreshed and head down to the quaint garden with your morning coffee. Sizzle up a BBQ out here in the summer, looking out towards breathtaking lake and mountain views.

When you’re ready to venture past Coniston, head out to Grizedale Forest (7 miles) for leisurely walks; children will be kept occupied by the special trails and outdoor sculptures. Wander the turrets and towers of Wray Castle (7 miles) where there are Peter Rabbit Adventure Rooms, but older children might prefer to visit the World of Beatrix Potter (13 miles) with virtual and interactive displays as well as Mr. McGregor’s vegetable patch. If Wordsworth is more up your street, Dove Cottage, his former home, is just 11.5 miles away in Grasmere.

A fabulous property, in a great location. It was so peaceful, even though not too far from the main road. The drive up to it isn't for the faint-hearted. Steep and narrow, but you soon get used to it. Best to have a lookout, when exiting back onto the main road at the bottom of the hill. The property itself was really clean and well equipped. The gRead morearden was fabulous (unlike the weather), but we still managed to have a BBQ or 2. The views are spectacular. We would love to return, as soon as able. Hide

Great location and stunning views from the gardens. Approach is a bit daunting at first - up a very narrow winding lane - but dont be put off! Very pretty cottage and wonderful outdoor spaces.

What a fab welcoming cottage in a great location. The cottage is lovely, well stocked and comfy and the garden is brilliant. We were lucky enough to have the weather to spend lots of time enjoying the views and tranquility without having to go anywhere. Coniston is a very short walk away on the old railway line and the Ship Inn is an equally short Read morejaunt in the opposite direction. Brill base for all sorts of walking/cycling/lake activities, we parked the car and didn't use it for the whole week. Hide
