Choosing Where To Stay In The Lake District
The Lake District is one of the worlds most beautiful regions, where its uniqueness as a National Park has it poised to join that rarified A list group of locations by becoming a World Heritage Site.
Whether you choose the north or the south lakes, you will experience a difference to anywhere else in the UK, having easy access to our magnificent landscape of lakes, mountains, forests and fells, along with a host of welcoming villages and towns offering fine cuisine, local produce, shopping, entertainment, arts and culture.
Staying in South Lakes
South lakes begins at the peninsulas jutting out into the sands of the Morecambe bay, through to the great central massive of the Cumbrian Mountains, with its dramatic roads the Wrynose and Hardknott passes, climbing through the Langdales.
The main lakes are Windermere, Coniston Water, Rydal and Grasmere, with dramatic Wastwater to the west, with its famous fells of Great Gable, Lingmell and the highest of our mountains, Scafell and Scafell Pike.
You will find plenty of villages and towns such as Cartmel, a foodies heaven, Kendal, the main town of the south with its vibrant arts and entertainment, along with the villages such as Coniston, Ambleside and Grasmere.
Staying in North Lakes
The centre of the north lakes is Keswick, a lively town set on the shores of Derwentwater. From here on all points of the compass are a host of lakes and fells for you to explore. East lie Thirlmere, Ullswater and Hawsewater, one of our most remote lakes, along with the great fells and mountains of Helvellyn, Fairfield and Blencathera. West are the tranquil lakes of Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater and Ennerdale, a recognised Dark Sky site, along with the densely wooded Whinlatter Forest with its mountain pass.
There are a host of little villages, along with the main towns of Keswick, Cockermouth and Penrith. Here you will find dining, art, and theater, along with shopping and local markets selling local produce.
