Wheelhouse Cottage

Overview

Set in the village of Cartmel, Wheelhouse Cottage sits by the river Eea and Wheelhouse bridge, a short distance off the main village square where you will find a clutch of excellent inns, cafes and restaurants including the Michelin awarded L'Enclume, along with a fine selection of shops.

Built over some 200 years ago it has been modernised, extended and refurbished to offer guests a fine and popular Lake District holiday cottage, the results being awarded a coveted 4 Star Gold Award from Visit England.

From winter 2016 the owners are delighted to offer their guests the added luxury of a garden Spa Softub in the privacy of the walled garden off the kitchen.

The Living Spaces

From the front riverside entrance you step into a large hall with steps leading down to the semi open plan living areas. The sitting room space has two plump sofas and an armchair set under a canopy of beams. Add soft lighting and a roaring fire and you have the perfect place to relax after your days explorations.

Just off the sitting room is the dining area, with French doors opening out onto a little riverside patio. The kitchen is well equipped with marble work tops and opens onto a small but sunny walled garden with the added bonus of a Spa Softub to soak away those aching muscles after a day on the fells. Or relax and enjoy an evening view of the night skys.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

Upstairs you can choose between two comfortable double bedrooms both with king size beds, the rear bedroom has the added facility of a TV. Both rooms are well furnished and share the super bathroom with bath, overhead shower, basin and WC.

Garden Spaces

From the kitchen is a little walled garden area with Spa Softub and garden furniture. To the front of the cottage there is the small terraced patio overlooking the river, perfect to enjoy a drink and feed the ducks and swans that cruise up and down.

There is a small iron bridge which crosses over to the opposite side of the river to a little private wild riverside bank (see inventory note.)

For me this is a charming little cottage, perfect for those who are looking for a comfortable and welcoming base for their holiday, yet be able to step out in the evening to wine and dine and I am sure Wheelhouse Cottage will meet all your expectations.

Out & About

Set on the Cartmel Peninsula and surrounded by rolling hills that tumble down to the coast Cartmel is one of Cumbria’s finest and unique villages. Picture perfect with ancient buildings, an impressive medieval priory, a towering arch and a sweet clear river along with the smallest National Hunt race course and a local brewery, this lively village a friendly welcome where you can sample the many cosy inns or fine restaurants, not least Simon Rogan's L'Enclume.

There are good local walks, notable is Hampsfell and Eggerslack Wood, a limestone fell and ancient woodland where the summit gives panoramic views of the Morecambe Bay and the Lake District Mountains, and where in spring the woodland is carpeted in bluebells.

For shopping there is the Cartmel Village Store in the square, and in Unsworth Yard you have Cartmel Cheeses and The Bread Shed along with The Red Pepper & Hot Wines shop and the Cartmel Brewery where you can sample some fine local brewed ale. Once a month the village holds a food market with many local producers setting up their stalls.

To the north of the village, clustered at the foot of Windermere lake, lies Newby Bridge, Lakeside and Fell Foot, the National Trusts parkland. At the Lakeside you can hop on a steamer for a trip on the lake, which winds its way for ten miles into the central fells, passing on the way Bowness, Sawrey and finishing at the Waterhead terminus near Ambleside.
