Separate Studio Annex Suite
For us Laburnum Cottage is one of the finest holiday homes in the Lake District, ticking all the boxes for the ideal place to stay; the right location, wonderful surrounds, magnificent views, delightful architecture, a stylish and comfortable contemporary interior design, along with gardens in which to relax, good local amenities and the cherry on the cake a super Gym Room, all combining to make the perfect holiday accommodation.
The nearest pub is about 300 yards down through the garden gate and field by footpath with the village just beyond offering a variety of shops, cafes and inns. The lake offers boating and steamboat trips, and over on the east shore one of the finest walks in the Lake District up to Howtown – see our location guide below. From the far end of the grounds a discrete track leads to one of the footpaths taking you all the way to the summit of Hellvelyn one of our most famous and iconic mountains.
Owners Stephen and Lynn Dixon have invested huge amounts of time, energy, love and imagination in renovating and refurbishing this traditional Lake District cottage, where a keen desire to please their guests has resulted in a chic holiday home, perfect for family holidays, or as a very special romantic retreat for honeymoons, anniversaries and grand gestures.
Laburnum Cottage lies in the fells above the village of Glenridding, overlooking Ullswater. Approached by a cinder track that climbs through the fell, the cottage sits amongst manicured, sun-drenched terraces, falling away to grazing land owned by the property, and where the views are some of the very best, looking out to the southern basin of the lake and the high peaks of Place Fell and St Sunday Crag.
The Living Spaces
The main house is set on one level. Having parked up in the large forecourt, a path and a few steps takes you through the first terraced garden space and into the conservatory, a perfect room to relax, play games, write your post cards or simply admire the view.
From the conservatory you step into the sitting room, snug and cosy, with a plump leather sofa and armchair drawn around a log-burning stove, adding extra warmth and atmosphere in winter months, perfect to curl up with your favorite author or watch a blockbuster on the wide screen TV.
From the sitting room you pass through to the dining and kitchen space. A rustic table sits by a bay window with delicious views to the fells and a log-burning stove will add to the ambience for long dinners and convivial conversation late into any evening.
The dining room opens into the kitchen space. Marble tops sit atop shaker style cupboards, where the centerpiece is a handsome three oven, electric AGA. There is ample equipment and mod cons for producing your favorite Jamie dish, and you can charge a long drink with plenty of ice from the American style AGA fridge freezer, or whizz up a refreshing fruit juice in the electric juicer, and whilst sipping and dicing, browning and brazing, take in the view that fills the large widow.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
From the sitting room an arched opening takes you through to the two house bedrooms, each furnished to a high standard and with crisp quality linen.
The master bedroom sits to the far end. A beautiful room, it is furnished with a King sized bed, pretty furniture and calming decor and colour, all designed to offer the perfect nights rest. The en-suite bathroom is a joy. A large freestanding bath is there to relax and soak tired muscles, a walk in shower to revive and refresh and the whole is clad with beautiful stone tiles top to bottom.
The second bedroom looks out to the front terrace. A plump Queen sized bed promises comfort and plenty of Zzzeds. The decor is muted and enhanced by the view from the bay window. The en-suite shower room (which can also be accessed from the hall) is clad in rich marble tiles and has a large walk in shower, along with basin and WC. Chrome and glass is given a splash of pizazz with a fascinating infinity mirror.
The Annex Suite
The third bedroom is located a few steps from the main house in the Annex Suite. Pop out from the back door of the kitchen and you come to the far terrace. A few stone steps lead up to a balcony with some of the best views and where you can enjoy a morning coffee. Step into the Annex and you have the most romantic little space for two. To one end sits the double bed, the other a small sofa along with wide screen TV and facilities to make tea and coffee. In keeping with the main house there is a super en-suite shower room clad in dove grey tiles and with a large walk in shower, hand basin and WC.
Opposite the Annex lies the Gym and laundry room along with a separate WC with hand basin. The cherry on the cake of this super property, the gym room is a super space with timbered floor, massive windows looking out to the village, fells and lake. A collection of fitness equipment including an Apollo Pro commercial water rowing machine, a Life Fitness C3 Upright exercise cycle and a range of weights and dumbbells.
Finally to the grounds; there are few places we have visited that offer such perfect gardens to relax in and enjoy, where I am of a mind to let the photographs speak for themselves. A haven for wildlife you will see such rarities as red squirrel and woodpeckers, which could provide some special photo opportunities. Divided into outside rooms, you will discover delightful spaces to sit and read, terraces to dine alfresco and always with a view of rugged tree lined fell or shimmering lake to meet your gaze – it is beautiful – it is perfection.
Of our guest’s wish lists, one of the most desired is a view. Well Laburnum Cottage has one of the best I have come across, so beautiful I feel it needs special mention Wherever you choose to relax in the garden a view is always there; a glimpse of shimmering lake, a rugged fell top or a wooded crag will hold your gaze and afford a real feel good moment - it is truly perfect.
In summary we are truly excited and proud to be able to offer this unique holiday home to guests. The work and effort, care and attention poured into this cottage by its delightful owners will give its guests a special and memorable holiday in the Lakes, where all praise must go to the owners for their efforts, and to you for your excellent taste in reserving Laburnum Cottage.
Out & About
Ullswater is considered by many to be our most beautiful lake. A nine-mile serpentine body of water, it snakes its way north under the lea of the most magnificent fells and mountain.
On the western shores lie the three villages. Patterdale and Glenridding lie to the south, with Pooley Bridge at the northern head. Between them they offer shops, cafes and inns, the latter serving excellent local brews.
Boats can be hired to get you out onto the water, alternatively take a trip on one of the threes steamers that cruise the lake.
There are walks to suit all abilities. The eastern shore has no road for much of its length, offering one of the best walks in the National Park. For the more adventurous there are some big fells along with the famous Helvellyn and the precipitous Striding Edge – please do take a good map and observe mountain safety guidelines.
Further afield you have the town of Keswick on the shores of Derwentwater offering plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and inns along with the fabulous Theatre On The Lake.
North of Keswick lies two more great attractions. The Honister Slate Mine is an adventure for all ages. Set at the summit of the Honister Pass it is the last working slate mine in England where you go deep underground on a fully guided mine tour. Honister is also home to the much talked about Via Ferrata, an amazing sky high climbing experience.
Finally you might like to add to your places to visit the Whinlatter Forest, England’s only true mountain forest. Whinlatter is just west of Keswick and is a great day out for all ages. If you’re looking for adventure, try the Altura or Quercus mountain bike trails, which make full use of the stunning natural setting. The Whinlatter Wild Play trail is for children of all ages. Its 9 different play areas take you on a journey through the trees and include a climbing wall, water features, giant swings and a secret path. Or if you’ve got a head of heights, swing through the trees on the Go-Ape course.
Back south, leaving Patterdale, you take the Kirkstone Pass which winds its way through high fell and brings you down to the south lakes and Windermere.
All in all there is a much to see and do, both around the lake and nearby areas, towns and villages where to get the best from your visit it is well worth investing in a few good guides and maps.
