How Head House

How Head House overlooks Coniston Water with a backdrop of high fell and mountain. Set in the heart of the Lake District, How Head House lies near the northeast shores of Coniston Water, offering easy access to the many areas of shoreline open to the public, along with excellent walks and a nearby village. The views across to the lake give a panoramic picture of the Coniston mountain range and the mighty 'Old Man' rising above and reflecting in the lake. It is a pleasure to simply watch as its craggy slopes change in hue and colour with the time of day, weather and season.

Very well furnished, as recognised by the Visit England 4 Star award, How Head House offers guests comfortable accommodation for eight, along with all the benefits of the nearby village amenities and a fantastic landscape to explore. Nearby you have one of a our most beautiful lakes, a rugged mountain range, plenty of activities on, in and around the water, along with pubs, cafes, shops and a micro brewery - perfect.

The Living Spaces

Originally a barn dating from the 16th century, How Head House is now a fine semi detached home. You enter into a lobby and the dining hall area. Furnished with a large dining table and occasional pieces, it makes a fine room for indulging in grand meals and after dinner chat.

The kitchen is well planned and equipped with nice touches, such as an American style fridge freezer with icemaker for those long cool summer drinks.

Stairs lead down to the sitting room, furnished with sofas and armchair rockers drawn around a large wood-burning stove. Books, games, iPod docking station all endorse the care given to this property.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

There are five bedrooms. The master bedroom with its en-suite whirlpool bathroom and separate shower cubicle lies off the dining hall. Private and spacious it has super views across to the lake and mountains.

Downstairs are the remaining bedrooms; one double, one twin and two single. There is also a family bathroom fully equipped with bath, separate shower, basin and WC. There are further separate WCs in the upstairs and downstairs hall areas.

Games Room & Garden Spaces

Outside, across from the main building, you will find the games room with a pool table, leather sofas, a log burning stove and doors opening onto the patio and outdoor dining area, giving beautiful views of the mountains & lake. There is also a small breakfast bar area with sink and fridge for drinks preparation.

How Head House is set well off the road along a shared driveway, the grounds leading up to wonderful lake and mountain views from the house and patio. The house is welcoming and for your arrival a complimentary bottle of wine from the owners to celebrate the start of your holiday.

Out & About

Coniston Water, the village and the Coniston Old Man are three icons of the Lake District. Set in the very heart of the National Park this area has been a long time favourite for walkers and climbers along with those that prefer a gentler, more relaxed holiday.

The village offers shops, inns and cafes and at the boating centre you can hire boats to take out onto the water, or take a trip on the lake cruisers or the ridiculously beautiful steam yacht Gondola.

The mountain is climbable by any reasonably fit person, with well-marked tracks to the summit. Even if you only go part way the view will be memorable.

East of the lake is the huge Grizedale Forest. A centre for all things woodland, there are trails that take you on a nine mile route, where on the way you can spot the many sculptures created by resident and visiting artists. At the visitor centre bikes can be hired for mountain biking, and at Go-Ape, the tree top assault course, you can find your inner Tarzan.

Guest Reviews

We just wanted to write to let you know what a fantastic time we all had at How Head House. Our Christmas week was just wonderful, we wished we could stay for longer. We were a group of two families, neither of us had ever rented a cottage before so it was all new to us and we didn't really know what to expect. We were certainly not disappointed. The cottage was just perfect, very homely and cosy, perfect views, there was nothing any of us wanted/needed that wasn't there for our use. Games DVD's, it was like home from home. The cottage was extremely clean, lovely big beds, a fully equipped kitchen,   it was just perfect. We honestly expected to be out hunting for a Christmas tree the afternoon we arrived, but couldn't believe a lovely man turned up from the maintenance company, armed with a tree ready to assemble!!! A great Christmas break, a fabulous cottage, we couldn't have wished for more. We will definitely use your company again.
Many many thanks - Gill & Mick S.
We stayed at this beautiful cottage Christmas 2013, we had a family get together, it was one of the best Christmases we have had, the cottage was clean and tidy, all amenities and the view was magnificent, we would like to thank the Lakeland Cottage Company for an easy process and fantastic stay.

Our second visit to this fantastic house in such a wonderful location.  We range in age from 7 to 81!  We had a great time climbing The Old Man of Coniston, the younger members of the family spent time playing hide and seek in the garden and we enjoyed a lovely family meal outside admiring the spectacular views.
