This pretty cottage, on a small country estate with its own shoreline, is the perfect Lakeland retreat. Amble around the extensive shared grounds, enjoy a paddle and picnic on the shores of Coniston Water or hire a boat from the boating centre, on the opposite shore, and glide majestically from jetty to jetty, stopping off for a gentle stroll along the beautiful path that hugs the water’s edge.

The traditional stone property benefits from exceptional views over the water and towards the mountain ranges beyond. The homely accommodation is warm and inviting, thanks to thoughtful touches and stylish decor. After a day out on the water, come home to the cosy cottage and snuggle up in front of the roaring wood burner. To the front of the property is a large, shared garden, with fantastic views. On a warm summer’s evening, pour yourself a glass of wine and bask in the tranquillity or enjoy a spot of al fresco dining under the stars. If you’d like to bring your own sailing boat, there are jetties available along the private stretch of shoreline.

As well as the spectacular lake, Coniston village (2 miles away) is also well worth exploring. Full of independent cafes, shops and bistros, it’s the perfect place to get an authentic feel for the area and sample some of the delicious local produce. You may also like to visit The Ruskin Museum, where you can learn about Donald Campbell’s ill-fated speed record attempt on the lake and the village’s fascinating industrial past. This is Beatrix Potter country, and fans will be pleased to learn that her 17th-century farmhouse, Hill Top, is just 5 miles away. The National Trust property has been preserved just as Beatrix left it and the cottage gardens are a true delight to explore.
