Ford Barn, The Square, Cartmel 

The following access statement has been provided by Charlotte and Les Mitchell, the owners of this property. This access statement does not contain personal opinions as to our property’s suitability for those with access needs, but aims to accurately describe the facilities and services that we offer all our guests/visitors.


Ford Barn is a recent conversion of a traditional Lakeland barn dating from the 17th century. A stone building retaining a great deal of character set in the heart of Cartmel village yet having an enclosed walled garden and private parking for one car.

The exposed original timbers, thoughtful furnishing and attention to detail throughout make Ford Barn ideal for families or friends to holiday comfortably together or for a lovely romantic retreat.

Ford Barn is reached from the corner of The Square between The King’s Arms and Ford House across a small area of cobbles then tarmac to the large double gates that open onto a Lakeland slate gravel courtyard parking area approx 5m x 8m.

• The nearest bus stops, in both directions, are at the bottom of The Causeway heading into Cartmel village centre.

• The nearest train station is in Grange-Over-Sands approximately 2 miles away.

 Arrival & Car Parking Facilities 


  • On entering The Square park temporarily in front of The King’s Arms and Ford House.  Parking conditions are being changed in spring /summer 2017 but at present there is a marked ‘keep clear’ area allowing vehicular access to Ford Barn.
  • We recommend reversing into the property. Open the large gates to Ford Barn. The right hand gate opens inwards and the left hand gate outwards.
  • • Gates have a maximum 3.6m opening but the access to the gates is only 2.9m. There is a raised curb at the entrance, between the tarmac and gravel. The gravel forecourt has exterior lights on a movement detector.
  • • Parking for one car. In addition we supply  a parking permit  for the village car park for your use. The car park is approximately 200m away out of the top of The Square along the left hand side of the village shop. Please display the permit in your car and leave it at the property on departure.

• Cartmel village shop 50 yards away in The Square(offers cash back on purchases over £5).

• Small, but very helpful convenience store is 5 minutes walk away (has a cash machine inside the shop. This does sometimes run out of cash. Cash back available with purchases over £5).


 Additional Information 

• Dogs are welcome by arrangement; we politely request that they are not allowed upstairs or on any of the furniture. Dog bed, bedding, bowl and dog towel provided.

• Heating is gas central heating throughout. Radiators have individual thermostats on right hand side.

• There is an information folder provided

• BT Wireless Broadband for internet access, DAB radio signal not yet available.

• Mobile Phone coverage – please consult your network provider’s website. Vodafone seem to get better reception.

• Non-smoking property.
