Located in a delightfully secluded spot half a mile from the shores of Ullswater, this traditional Lakeland miner’s cottage has been stunningly updated to provide cosy accommodation for two guests. An ideal romantic retreat with breathtaking views of the lake, this charming 19th-century stone-built property can be found in a tranquil wooded enclave frequented by red squirrels and an array of birdlife. With miles of beautiful walks from the doorstep, this is a fabulous base for a couple exploring the southern Lake District.

Accessed via an unmade woodland track, the cottage forms the gable-end of a terrace and features a light, relaxing lounge/diner with pitch-pine beams and a traditional wood burner. The kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, with an AGA-style oven and views towards Ullswater. Upstairs, there’s a bright and relaxing king-size bedroom with exposed ceiling beams, limed-oak flooring with underfloor heating and a stylish en-suite wainscoted bathroom. Stepping outside, the lawn is shared with the neighbouring property and makes a lovely spot to sit back and enjoy the superb views of the lake and surrounding woodland.

The cottage is set in an idyllic spot above the Glencoyne Valley, with the slopes of the Sheffield Pike fell leading up to Helvellyn (5.5 miles), one of the highest peaks in England. The picturesque village of Glenridding (1.5 miles) lies at the foot of Kirkstone Pass, towards the southern end of Ullswater, and has a welcoming range of excellent restaurants and pubs. This is a wonderful area for walkers of all abilities, or you could head to Ullswater and cruise across the lake by steamship. The impressive Aira Force Waterfall (2.5 miles) is to the north. Also nearby is the charming village of Patterdale (2.5 miles) and the thriving market town of Keswick (15.5 miles) on the banks of Derwentwater.
