Situated in a charming and secluded location within half a mile of the banks of Ullswater, this traditional former miner’s cottage has been imaginatively updated to offer cosy and welcoming accommodation for two. This idyllic getaway makes a wonderful romantic retreat, features stunning views across Ullswater and is set in a pretty wooded enclave visited by a variety of birds and red squirrels. Dating back to the mid-19th century, this comfortable and relaxing stone-built property makes a wonderful bolthole for a couple discovering this spectacular part of the Lake District.

Situated at the end of an unmade woodland track, the cottage features a fresh and inviting open-plan pitch-pine beamed lounge/kitchen/diner. This charming living space is equipped with a traditional wood burner, an AGA-style oven, exposed beams and beechwood, and butcher’s block work surfaces. A small dining table divides the lounge from the kitchen. A short staircase leads to a light and tasteful double bedroom with underfloor heating. The lawn is shared with the neighbouring property and offers glorious views across Ullswater.

This delightful property is set in a beautiful, elevated location overlooking the Glencoyne valley, in the shadow of Sheffield Pike fell which leads up to one of the highest points in England, Helvellyn (5.5 miles by foot). This is a fabulous area for walkers and climbers of all abilities, or you could head to Ullswater and take a trip across the lake by steamship. Nearby, at the foot of Kirkstone Pass, is the pretty village of Glenridding (1.5 miles) which has a variety of friendly pubs and restaurants. Other local attractions include the Aira Force Waterfall (2.5 miles) and the Lake District Ski Club (3.5 miles by foot). Also nearby are the picturesque village of Patterdale (2.5 miles) and the bustling market town of Keswick (15.5 miles).

We loved the location and style of the Red Squirrel Den, but there are a few things that could be improved: - several lightbulbs were missing - no hairdryer - only huge logs and no kindling provided for fireplace - tired sofa could do with replacement - very low water pressure, we were unable to take a proper shower - we reached out to housekeepingRead more three times and never heard back. A fabulous, cozy cottage off the beaten track. The cottage is well named, as we saw red squirrels every day . The approach road has to be taken carefully, as it is prone to breakdown by rain etc Straightforward driving to Pooley Bridge, Rheged etc

Beautiful cottage, cosy, fabulous views.. had a lovely time here The track to the cottage is fine but if you aren't a confident driver as its a single track with no passing points you may find this off putting so be aware especially if you meet another car on way up or way down..

This is a very cosy, quickly little cottage and is well appointed. The location is lovely and the red squirrels playing in the garden together with the abundant bird life made our holiday special. Using the Aga to cook was great and I now want one at home. The bed linen was beautifully laundered and good quality. Overall we had a lovely stay.

Lovely cosy cottage in a special location. Perfect for a short break as a couple. Parking situation was a little precarious, we arrived late evening in an estate car and had a very narrow space remaining to turn and park on the track.
