With a wonderfully chequered history, this former village lock-up makes a quirky base for couples who like to do things a little differently. Follow in the footsteps of rogues and miscreants from times gone by as you arrest your wanderlust in the beautiful village of Cartmel. Sitting between the Lake District and the picturesque Morecombe Bay coastline, this village is notorious in its own right thanks to its stunning 12th-century priory. And if this romantic micro-let doesn't get your heart racing, the nearby racecourse certainly will.

This unique property is a treat for the senses. Inside this former jail lies a contemporary interior that's perfect for couples with a sense of adventure. And while this listed property does not contain a lounge or a kitchen, it still boasts everything you need for a compact and comfortable stay. Step through the authentic barred door and leave coats and boots in the built-in storage area. Then steal up to the impressive bedroom complete with four-poster bed and Smart TV for catching up on your latest obsession. Outside, a charming patio area lies in wait for warm summer evenings.

Renowned for its cobbled streets and idyllic stream-side walks, Cartmel has quickly become one of the Lake District's most renowned destinations. But guests can still enjoy serene strolls through the surrounding countryside. Try the 8-mile wander from Grange-over-Sands to Hampsfell and savour stunning views over Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland Fells. Or sample some of Cartmel's famous food scene, including its revered restaurants and independent artisans. The racecourse draws big crowds during the summer racing season so if a flutter isn't for you, take a lazy day trip to the serene village of Kendal (14 miles) and enjoy a thriving art scene.

Please note there is a refundable £100 security deposit for this property payable closer to the start of your holiday.

The Jail is a great place to stay for a few days (we did four nights) and Cartmel is a surprisingly interesting destination with some amazing eating places and watering holes - even its own micro brewery. I knew the space was small and it was..probably 4 nights was a bit too long considering it rained and we couldn't make use of the outdoor seating.....a parasol would have been a handy addition. Ideal location.

I took my partner here for her birthday and we had a great time. The old jail house is exactly what you need for a small stay, its unique, interesting and in a beautiful location. The pubs and locals were amazing. All in all we had a great weekend and would definitely recommend this place.

Great place to stay for a couple of nights, it's very quirky, and it's finished to a high spec. It's also in a great location. I would recommend for a short break, but it's worth knowing that it is really, really tiny - it's pretty tricky to walk around the bed, and there's very little space for your bags etc., so definitely best for those weekend Read moretrips when you don't have much luggage, and you'll be out and about all day, and just need a bed to collapse on at the end of it! The Jail is ideally situated for exploring all that Cartmel has to offer, but even for a small couple like ourselves, the property is very cramped at times! Certainly a unique stay, but not the most relaxing.

Adventure, memories and awe-inspiring natural beauty await you in the rugged, wild and unique Cumbrian Lake District where beautiful expanses of water merge with magical forests against a backdrop of dramatic mountains and fells.

This ancient land has been sculpted by time and nature and is the newest UNESCO World Heritage Site and the first UK National Park to be awarded this outstanding accolade. Poets, writers and artists throughout the ages have been instinctively drawn here; William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin, to name a few. The attractions and the diverse landscape will not fail to charm the young and the young at heart, whether that be thrill-seeking activities you seek, pure and cathartic inspiration or simply just some relaxation, you will find it here.

Cycling, walking, canoeing, white-water rafting, flying, parachuting and ballooning are just some of the offerings for any level of adrenalin junky. Experience the glory of nature in the wild or in a setting such as the Predator Experience where you can walk with wolves and learn about the importance of conservation. For a complete day of family, enjoy treetop capers at Go-Ape in the Grizedale Forest.

Vibrant towns and villages are there to be discovered, be it by land or water. You can step back in time and enjoy a steamboat cruise on a lake or leisurely unearth the dynamic scene of contemporary art, culture and some of the best dining in the UK by foot, bus or car.

The National Park is an area of breath-taking beauty that will leave you spoilt for choice, refuelled and inspired. So much so that you’ll want to come back time and time again.
