This pretty Lakeland cottage sits in one of the oldest parts of Ambleside, and is a wonderful base for a group of friends or family. Ambleside is well set up for self-catering stays, with an excellent mix of everyday shops, tempting cafes and lively bars. There's no shortage of activities either. Outdoor facilities include tennis courts, a bowling green and pitch and putt. Alternatively, fell walks begin in the village, with a variety of routes to suit all abilities. If the weather turns, head indoors to tackle the climbing wall and cave system for an adventurous afternoon that suits all ages. After a day roaming the Lakes, you won't have far to go to refuel – a popular pub sits right next door to the cottage, ideal for a hearty meal or a refreshing drink.

From the front door, head straight into the colourful lounge where retro furnishings sit against wooden floors layered with rugs. At its heart is a wood burner set within an inglenook fireplace, creating a warm focal point, while a TV with Smart dongle keeps everyone entertained. A light-filled hallway leads towards the rear of the house, where a beautifully crafted spiral staircase winds down to the kitchen/diner. This contemporary yet characterful room blends old and new with sleek units contrasting with flagged floors, exposed beams and a striking black range. On the first floor, you'll find two newly updated bathrooms: one with a shower over the bath and the other a shower room. From here, there are lovely views across the village towards Loughrigg Fell. The master double bedroom is also on this level, decorated with wooden floors and an original feature fireplace. The second floor hosts two further bedrooms: a bright twin at the front of the house and a smaller double to the rear, with access from one side of the bed.

To the rear, a secure outhouse provides storage for a couple of bikes. While there's no private garden, Rothay Park is within a couple of hundred metres. A parking permit for a nearby car park is included and is valid across several South Lakeland car parks.

My family of four really enjoyed our stay. The place was very charming with rustic wooden floors, updated kitchen, and a wood-burning stove we enjoyed using in the evening. The property is a little tricky to access when dropping off luggage at arrival but very clear instructions were provided up front. The parking permit came in handy and the RydalRead more Road car park is just a very short walk away. Very close to city center with plenty of shops and restaurants within a short walk. I definitely recommend! Hide

Our first 3-generational family stay in the Lake District. What a gorgeous cottage stay with a lot of character. Perfect location to explore.

Very nice cottage in the old part of Ambleside. Pubs, bus stop and shops are very near and many nice walks can be undertaken directly from the cottage. The cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay. All is clean and you feel at home from the very beginning. You shouldn't mind using stairs, because the rooms spread over four floors. TheRead morere is no parking place next to the house but we were provided with a permission to use the car parks free of charge. Everything was perfect for us (a group of five people aged between 23 and 64 years). We can highly recommend it. Hide

We had an amazing stay for one week. Check-in was smooth and everything worked fine! Convenient location accessible to the main lakes by public buses as we didn't have a car. The cottage was so cute that my children did not want to leave!
