Owned by Steve Edmondson of the Brown Horse Inn, South Springfield is located in the tiny hamlet of Winster, at the heart of the Winster Valley. This beautiful landscape lies a few miles west of Lake Windermere, between the Cartmel fells and the Lyth valley.
The hamlet is made up of a few houses dotted amongst the rolling hills and, best of all, the Brown Horse Inn right next door, where you can enjoy excellent cuisine, fine wines and local beers in very pleasing surrounds. The inn produces much of its own food and come summer there is a market stall where you can purchase fresh produce.
The valley is a series of gentle hills, criss crossed with country lanes passing through pasture, by woodland and over rivers and becks, perfect for walks and cycling.
A shortish car ride brings you to the foot of Windermere, where you can spend a day at Fell Foot park mucking about in and on the water. Head south onto the Cartmel peninsular and you can explore the coastline, joining Cumbria's section of the coastal way. A drive around the head of the Morecambe bay brings you to Arnside and one of my favorite walks, which takes you for miles across flat silvery sands, hugging the craggy shoreline.
Not to be overlooked is town of Kendal. Well worth a visit for its shops, also the many restaurants and the thriving art scene, with the Brewery Arts Centre offering live gigs, theatre and cinema, also the Abbott Hall Art Gallery which hosts many fine and changing art exhibitions.

For me South Springfield is the ideal retreat for couples or families. Semi detached, the house sits in and is surrounded by beautiful gardens, which in turn look out to low fells and small woodlands, where all is perfect to simply relax and truly a home in which to holiday at, venturing out as the mood takes you.
You approach from behind the inn, where there is parking for three cars. From the rear garden gate a little path leads down to the kitchen entrance.
The ground floor is divided into two open, spilt level spaces. The kitchen - dining area is well equipped and centered on the AGA to one end, a dining area overlooking the front garden and a small snug with a sofa drawn around an open fire. The combination makes for the perfect space to prepare fine dinners and wine and dine in cosy surrounds.
A few steps lead up into the sitting room with views on all sides out to the gardens. A large space, it is comfortably furnished with plump sofas, ornament and pictures. A log burning stove adds cheer in winter and a large flat screen TV is perfect to tuck up and watch the lates block buster.
Up the fine oak stairs and you have the three bedrooms, a small snug for watching TV and the bathroom. The bedrooms are all tastefully furnished and offer two doubles and a bunk bedded room offering a double bottom bunk and single upper that may well accommodate three small children. The bathroom is well equipped with bath, overhead shower, basin and WC. Downstairs there is a further WC and shower located in the small scullery.
Back to the gardens. Surrounding the house on three sides these are the owners pride and joy. And rightly so as they are landscaped to form different spaces, divided by a host of shrubs, trees, plants and grasses along with a small pond, which in summer offers a huge pallet of colour and texture - perfect.
All in all the combination of location, stylish furnishings and decor, beautiful grounds, along with a great pub next door makes this property a must for a real relaxing holiday in the Lake District.
