Owner Steve Edmondson of the Brown Horse Inn has built and created one of my favourite holiday homes. Approached by a leafy country lane, and just under a mile from the Brown Horse Inn, this superb house is set in rolling fell and woodland at the heart of the Winster Valley.

This beautiful valley landscape lies a few miles west of Lake Windermere, between the Cartmel fells and the Lyth valley.

One of two properties set overlooking a small  tarn the location is tranquil, the view perfect.

A little short of a mile away is the Brown Horse Inn  where you can enjoy excellent cuisine, fine wines and local beers in very pleasing surrounds. The inn produces much of its own food and come summer there is a market stall where you can purchase fresh produce.

The valley is a series of gentle hills, criss crossed with country lanes passing through pasture, by woodland and over rivers and becks, perfect for walks and cycling. A shortish car ride brings you to the foot of Windermere, where you can spend a day at Fell Foot park mucking about in and on the water. Head south onto the Cartmel peninsular and you can explore the coastline, joining Cumbria's section of the coastal way. A drive around the head of the Morecambe bay brings you to Arnside and one of my favorite walks, which takes you for miles across flat silvery sands, hugging the craggy shoreline.

Not to be overlooked is town of Kendal. Well worth a visit for its shops, also the many restaurants and the thriving art scene, with the Brewery Arts Centre offering live gigs, theatre and cinema, also the Abbott Hall Art Gallery which hosts many fine and changing art exhibitions.

Tarn View

For me Tarn View is one of our finest holiday homes. Designed and built for easy living and furnished with style and imagination, the house offers guests comfort, space and a super location where you can truly holiday at the home.

Set above a small tarn, Tarn View and nearby Rhoda House both look across still waters with a backdrop of low fell and woodlands. Across the water lie the nursery gardens where Steve grows much of the fresh produce used at the Brown Horse, including vegetables and fruit, along with chickens and a flock of geese and ducks. Wildlife is abundant, where you will see many species of bird, including Heron, buzzards and owls and, with a bit of luck, fox and deer.

Built all on one level you best enter by the side door into the scullery and boot room with laundry facilities and a separate WC.

From here you enter into the large open plan living space. A modern, fully equipped kitchen offers all you need to rustle up your best dishes. The sitting room area has a plump leather sofa and arm chair set around a fine fireplace with a roaring log burner. The dining table is long and set with comfortable chairs where you can enjoy long dinners well into the night. Windows and French doors look out onto terraced gardens, fell and the tarn – perfect!

From the main living space you go into a hall. Here you can choose between three bedrooms, all very well furnished and comfortable. There is the master double, with en-suite shower room, a further double and a bunk bedded room. The master bathroom is well equipped with bath, overhead shower, basin and WC.

Outside large grounds surround the property. There is a parking area along with a terraced patio garden with table and chairs, sloping lawns and a track down to the nearby waters edge.

Whether you are looking for a family holiday, a gathering for celebration with friends or just a couple looking for somewhere romantic and a little special, then Tarn View may well be for you.
