Bank Barn is one of the finest holiday homes in the Lake District, offering the perfect location for family holidays, with easy access, being 7 miles into the National Park from Penrith, yet is off the tourist trail offering true peace and seclusion.
A half mile from the shores of Ullswater, you can have plenty of fun in and on the water, walks onto high fell and mountain, with the perfect house to come home to and relax and unwind after your day’s activity.

All around delightful walks take you through fell and woodland, with stunning views out over Ullswater. Nearby is Aira Force, probably the most famous of the Lake District waterfalls. The main force falls some 70ft below a stone footbridge - so don't forget your camera.

Over on the western side of the lake is possibly one of the best trails, which follows the lake shore, sometimes rising to higher fell for stunning views. This walk can be approached either by starting at the southern basin or by taking a boat over to How Town.

To the southern end of the lake, 6 miles away, are the villages of Glenridding and Patterdale from which to explore Grisedale and Helvellyn. At the northern end, 3 miles away, is Pooley Bridge with its pier for the famous Ullswater Steamers. All have local shops and some fine inns to enjoy a meal out.

For special occasions you should try the famed Sharrow Bay. The restaurant has a Michelin star and has to be one of the finest hotel restaurants in the Lake District. A unique atmosphere enables guests to relax and dine in luxurious comfort whilst enjoying the magnificent views of lake and fells.

Bank Barn

From a leafy, winding country lane that takes you high above Ullswater, and then along a private drive you come to Bank Barn and the few nearby properties which are all set under a wooded ridge overlooking the lake, with a backdrop of fell and mountain.

Set in large grounds your first impression will be of the sheer size of this former Lakeland barn. Built, designed and refurbished as a home for and by the owners, the property offers stylish interiors with a contemporary theme with far eastern influences and wonderful spaces in which to enjoy your holiday.

From the rear courtyard you enter into a large boot room with plenty of space for all those bits and bobs.

From here you step down into a large farmhouse style kitchen. Very well fitted and equipped, there is a large table for occasional dining, an AGA set in the old fireplace for use in winter months, along with a huge American style fridge freezer, which will deliver endless ice for your long tall drinks.

From the kitchen you enter into the central hall used for more formal dining. A large space with pitched and beamed ceiling, there is an elegant table, some occasional sofas and armchairs and a huge picture window, which is filled with a view of lake and mountain.

Finally there is the sitting room. Large but cosy, it is filled with plump, comfortable sofas and chairs all set around a roaring open fire, perfect to relax and while away an evening in the company of friends and family or watch a movie on the 40" flat screen TV.

Back to the dining room, where a winding staircase takes you down to the lower level and the long hall, which stretches the whole length of the building. Off this you have four bedrooms from which to choose. There is the master bedroom with 6’ bed and en-suite bathroom with separate shower, bath and WC. A further double, with a 5’ bed, again with en-suite bathroom with separate shower, bath and WC. Two twin bedded bedrooms, both with 3’ beds and a shared bathroom with bath, shower, basin and WC.

At the end of the hall you will find the laundry room and, finally, the snug, perfect for children with sofas, a large TV and stairs that bring you back up to the top floor by the boot room.

Surrounding Bank Barn are terraced patios and lawned areas planted with shrubs and trees. With stunning views of Lake Ullswater and the surrounding mountains, the gardens are the perfect place for adults to relax and children to play in.

All in all this is one of our finest holiday homes where all expectations should be met. Whether your holiday is with family, a gathering of friends or simply a couple looking for somewhere special - come – enjoy and congratulate yourself on your excellent taste.

6th March 2010 -  Ian, Mark, Peter x 2, Ralph, Bob and Simon
This is our second visit and still fantastic.  The local pub seems to have improved and is now very friendly and welcoming.  We have had clear sunny days with winter snow and ice conditions.  A fantastic week with the best weather ever over a 22 year period of our boys mountaineering.  We hope to be back.  In 22 years this is the only property we have been to twice!

26th March - Moores, Caunts, Wests and Taylors
The best 50th birthday break a girl could wish for.  Wonderful house and location...and the best friends were all I needed.  House fab!  Location great!  Superb weekend.  Very good meal at The Brackenrigg Pub despite negative comments in the book.

1- 8 May 2010 - Mortimer and Rowlands
Perfect place to stay, walk and relax.  Will be back.  If size matters this is the place!  Lovely to look out of the window and see the colour in the fields.  Superb meal at the Drunken Duck.  And really enjoyed cooking in the fantastic kitchen.

Perfect home, Perfect setting.  The snug for the young ones.  The open fire in the upstairs sitting room wonderful for conversation and a glass or two!  Beautiful.
November 2011 - Hi Sue
Just a quick message to say how fantastic Bank Barn was over the weekend.  We were exceptionally lucky with the weather, which always makes a difference, but the house exceeded all expectations - just perfect in every way.  Amazed that the owners are happy to share such a beautiful home with others -  not only that - but also ensuring that visitors are made to feel so welcome.  The caretakers did a wonderful job - everything was spotless, and we really appreciated the many extra touches - including the fact that the fire was laid ready to just be lit, the house was warm and cosy on arrival, and there was a fantastic welcome tray (everyone thought the bread was particlularly delicious!).   Thank you to everyone!  We didn't want the time to come to an end, and we certainly wouldn't hesitate for a minute to return!
With best wishes,
Lyn.
