Tinkler Beck Cottage is one of 2 adjoining holiday cottages located on the North East tip of Coniston Water. Along with 3 other adjacent holiday properties and a row of traditional stone outbuildings, the cottages are set around a triangular courtyard on a small country estate and enjoy access to the estates private lake shore and jetties.
This area was much favored by such literary lights as Tennyson, Turner and later Arthur Ransome, author of the much loved childrens series of novels The Swallows & Amazons. Each drew inspiration from the surrounds where the views give a deep sense of the power and beauty of the Lake District landscape.
Today each cottage offers guests the perfect destination set in one of the finest locations in the central Lake District, where the view is filled by the high peaks of Coniston’s mountain range, reflected in deep waters.
The Surrounds
There are three jetties which for a small fee guests may moor their own boats or hire rowing, sailing or powered boats from the Coniston Boating Centre. With eight hundred yards of shore line to explore and the whole lake to muck about on, in and by, you have the ideal recipe for the perfect Lakeland holiday.
The village of Coniston lies about a mile and half around the lake, a mostly flat walk, offering shops, cafes and a number of good pubs serving locally brewed ale.
From the village, tracks lead up through the old coppermines valley and to the foot of Coniston Old Man, where the hearty can make an attempt to the 2635 ft summit and view never to be forgotten.
Tinkler Beck Cottage
Tinkler Beck Cottage - the property to the right in the main image, and to the left the adjoining Tinkler Beck Farm, are both situated on the west side of the lane above the lake. Set around a central courtyard opposite a row of three other cottages, each is much envied for a fabulous position so close the lake.
For 2010, owner Richard has rebuilt and refurbished Tinkler Beck Cottage as the perfect Lake District Cottage for six, befitting the unrivalled location.
For me it is the combination of style and comfort, coupled with magnificent surroundings in which to both relax and play, that makes this a very special holiday home.
From the private patio garden entrance to the rear of the property, you step into a utility room leading to the large, light filled kitchen - dining room space. The kitchen area is fully fitted with all mod cons, where you will be able to rustle up light lunches and hearty dinners. As a space to dine it is perfect, with its long dining table, French doors and a picture window that looks out over the patio with views of the nearby lake and mountain.
From the kitchen a hall takes you through to the cosy sitting room. Leather sofas sit around a roaring log burning stove, perfect to relax in summer or tuck up in winter with family and friends to pass away an evening, maybe with the latest block buster on the wide srceen TV.
Back to the hall and you have a delightful downstairs double bedroom and opposite a separate downstairs WC. Also, on the ground floor is the bunk bedroom which lies on the other side of the kitchen.
Up stairs to the first floor and you have a very pleasing twin bedroom, a shower room with basin and WC, a further separate WC and the master bathroom with whirlpool bath, overhead shower, basin and WC. Finally a further flight of stairs opens out into the attic double bedroom. The optional bunk bedroom lies across
The grounds are fantastic. The courtyard is shared by the other cottages however to the rear of Tinkler Beck Cottage you have a delightful sunny patio area which looks through to the lake and mountain.
From the main grounds, a short walk through the meadow takes you down to the lake shore where you can picnic and swim in the gentle water and, if required use of the three jetties to moor your own or hired boats.
All in all Tinkler Beck Cottage will offer the perfect holiday, offering guests that rare element of fine accommodation, views of our magnificent mountains, private lake access and all set in the heart of Cumbrias Lake District.
