For me Townhead House and its adjoining little cottage, offer one of the finest lakeland locations. A stones throw from a remote bay, close to a river and on paths that take you to high fell, deep vales and lake shore walks, you will have everything for the perfect lakeland break.

Getting to Townhead House is an adventure in itself. From Pooley Bridge, at the northern head of the lake, your drive follows the eastern edge of Ullswater, squeezed between fell and lake shore, with glimpses over the water. At Howtown, the road becomes a winding lane rising steeply over fern covered fell slopes, then descending into the tiny hamlet of Sandwick.

The House is at the foot of Sleet Fell, looking over Sandwick Beck to Hallin Fell where, from the door, a short walk north takes you to Sandwick Bay and the waters edge.

From the cottage a bridleway leads to Patterdale and one of the most beautiful paths in the Lake District, taking in both lake shore and dramatic high fell.

For something a little special, you can drive back towards Pooley Bridge, where on the lake road you will find The Sharrow Bay Hotel, famed for both location and cuisine.

Townhead House

Adjoining Townhead Cottage, the house has been fully refurbished, offering a true country retreat. From the cobbled farm yard you enter into a passageway between the house and the old barns. From here you step into the dining room, with pine table and armchairs around a log burning stove and a flat screen TV. Off this lies the kitchen, well equipped with hand crafted beech furniture and a solid, electric aga style cooker.

Across the inner hall lies the sitting room, cosy, with sofas drawn around a log burning stove, perfect to tuck up in winter and in summer light streams through Georgian windows filled with a view of high fell.

Stairs wind up to the bedrooms of which one is a double with low style bed, one a twin and a further two are singles. The bathroom has bath overhead shower, basin and wc. There is a further wc downstairs off the passageway.

Outside is the cobbled yard which goes around the rear of the old barns and opens onto a grassy area where children can play.

If your idea of a perfect holiday is to escape the bustle of life, to be surrounded by magnificent scenery, take time for walks, prepare long lazy dinners and have the company of good friends - Townhead House is for you.
