Apple Tree Barn situated in the hamlet of Lowick Bridge in the Crake Valley, about a mile from the southern reach of Coniston Water and in the heart of the Lake District.
The landscape is the backdrop for Arthur Ransome's famous novels, perfect for walking and cycling. Bethacar Moor is criss crossed with tracks and pathways, rewarding you with bracing walks and fine views. At the foot of Coniston you can explore the shoreline with its little bays and, running west from the lake, lies the Grizedale Forest. A day out in itself, you can trek or bike the many paths, discovering the many wonderful sculptures commissioned by the forest chiefs.
North, at the head of the lake, lies Coniston village, offering shops, cafes and a number of good pubs serving locally brewed ale. From the Coniston village, tracks lead up through the old coppermines valley and to the foot of Coniston Old Man, where the hearty can make an attempt to the 2635 ft summit and view never to be forgotten.
At the Coniston Boating Centre, just outside of the village, you can hire rowing, sailing and little powered boats, setting off to explore the shoreline and bays, or take a trip on a steam boat.
Back at home, a short walk from the barn brings you to the Red Lion Inn. Friendly staff serve good local ales and hearty pub food where visitors are welcome to join in events such as quiz nights - all great fun.
Apple Tree Barn
Owners Tim and Debbie have created a fabulous Lake District holiday home from this fine Lakeland barn. Adjacent to their own home, Debbie's flare for decor and style has given each of the rooms a wonderful quality, one which has been recognised by the Visit Britain five star award.
From the veranda entrance you enter into a stepped hall, floored with polished, jet black local slate.
To one side lies the the kitchen and dining room. Large and beautifully fitted you have revealed stone walls, pitched ceilings with oak beams and a wonderful Burlington green slate floor beneath your feet. The units and cupboards are locally hand crafted and, to rustle up your favorite dishes, is a super range oven with gas hobs.
Across the hall lies the large sitting room. Polished timber floors sit under huge oak trusses. A couple of plump sofas and armchair make this a cosy place to relax, with the added benefit of a gas fueled burner to add a bit of atmosphere and extra warmth during those cooler months. For a lazy evening in you can be entertained by the huge flat screen TV with HD SKY film and sports package
Back to the hall and a few steps lead up to the laundry room where you will also find a good selection of toys and games for younger children.
The bedrooms lie on the lower level. Stairs lead down to a large lower hallway where the huge glazed windows let light flood in.
There are four bedrooms to choose from. The two double four posters are stylish, contemporary and quite romantic, with one having a king sized bed and each having a super en-suite steam shower room with basin and WC. The two twin bedrooms can be made up as queen sized doubles if requested and both share the master bathroom with roll top bath, hand held shower, basin and WC.
Outside you have the forecourt with the veranda with views across meadows to the Coniston mountains. A little gate goes into the most delightful sun drenched walled garden. Large and private, you have apple trees and shrubs, lawn and pretty flowerbeds along with excellent garden furniture and a large barbecue, all perfect to simply relax and enjoy
For me Apple Tree Barn is one of our finest Lake District Cottages, making a spacious home for families or couples, offering quality and style, a place to simply relax as well as an ideal central base for exploring the National Park and I am sure will please all who stay.
