Grange over Sands lies eight miles south from the foot of Windermere, on the Cartmel Peninsula, overlooking the Morecambe Bay.
The village is one of my favourites, but as I live here, perhaps I am a little biased. A long time favourite as a lakes come coastal destination, it was popularised during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, partly due to the so called micro climate we seem to have here. Indeed where else would you find palm trees in little gardens in Cumbria.
Renowned for the view across the bay, it is a vista to rival any of the nearby lakes. For a gentle stroll there is the long promenade edging the bay, or go up onto Hampsfell, with its natural lime stone pavement and surrounding woodland, to be rewarded with a panoramic view of both bay and the Lakeland mountains.
For one of the best walks, drive around the head of the bay, or catch the little train across to Arnside. From here you can walk along the edge of the bay, with miles of shimmering sands before you when the tide is out. Trust me, this is one of the best walks in Cumbria.
In the village you will find a good selection of friendly shops such as Stewart Higginson's butchers, voted one of the best in the country, the veg shop offering a huge range of local produce and, with the baker, the general stores, chemist, deli and few pubs, a lot of cafes and plenty of hotels with bars and restaurants, all combine to give you everything you need.
A mile over the hill from the cottage lies Cartmel. A must to visit, this little village is a real picture postcard, offering four good pubs, along with Simon Rogan's L'enclume restaurant, internationally renowned for fine innovative cuisine and the newly opened Rogan's wine bar.reccomended.
As well as being very pretty, Cartmel boasts one other famous attraction, the Cartmel Race Course. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful English Lake District, the course is the smallest in the country, yet gets TV coverage with its exciting steeple to steeple chases. Along with the races there is always a fun fair where the whole event gives the village a great party atmosphere.
Underwood Cottage
Owners Barry and Heather Saunders have taken this traditional stone built Lakeland cottage, refurbished and modernised to offer their guests a very comfortable holiday cottage, set in peaceful surrounds.
The cottage lies on a narrow country lane on the edge of Grange and a mile from Cartmel.
From the front entrance you step into the large kitchen. Very well equipped you have all mod cons along with an AGA cooker to rustle up some hearty meals.
The sitting room is light and comfortable, with leather sofas, a dining table to one end and a view out to the orchard garden.
Finally downstairs you have a very nice double bedroom with en-suite shower, also a separate WC in the inner hall.
Upstairs and you have a comfortable twin bedroom and a super large master double with king size bed. Both of these bedrooms share the master bathroom with bath, overhead shower, basin and WC.
To the front is a hard standing for cars and to the rear is a good sized garden. Surrounded by hedges and stone walls and shaded by the old apple trees, it is quite private, perfect for a barbecue or pre dinner drink.
I like this cottage very much for both for its setting and finish which will be perfect for families and friends to have a relaxing Lake District holiday. There is much to do and see, both nearby and far and I am sure all who stay will have a delightful holiday experience.
