The Apartment
Orlestone House is set in the Edwardian style village of Grange over Sands ,overlooking the beautiful Morecambe Bay. Apartment 3 forms the top floor of this fine, three story house a short walk from the village centre. Approached from a steepish garden path, you enter into the communal hall, then on up to the top floor landing and the apartments private entrance.
Designed for easy modern living, you will have all you need for a relaxing stay. The open plan sitting room, kitchen and dining area is large and airy, with comfortable sofas, a neat galley kitchen and views out to the bay.
Down the hall lie the two bedrooms. Both are doubles, comfortably furnished, with the master bedroom having the ensuite shower room. The second double bedroom has the option of being separated to offer 2 small singles. There is also a main bathroom with bath, hand held shower, basin and WC.
Whether you are a party of four or just a couple, I am sure this will make a perfect base to explore both the lakes and mountains, along with the costal areas, offering great comfort on each days return home.
The Location
Grange over Sands lies twelve miles south from the foot of Windermere, on the Cartmel Peninsula, overlooking the Morecambe Bay.
The village is one of my favourites, but as I live here, perhaps I am a little biased. A long time favourite as a lakes come coastal destination, it was popularised during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, partly due to the so called micro climate we seem to have here. Indeed where else would you find palm trees in little gardens in Cumbria.
Renowned for the view across the bay, it is a vista to rival any of the nearby lakes. For a gentle stroll there is the long promenade edging the bay, or go up onto Hampsfell, with its natural lime stone pavement and surrounding woodland, to be rewarded with a panoramic view of both bay and the Lakeland mountains.
For one of the best walks, drive around the head of the bay, or catch the little train across to Arnside. From here you can walk along the edge of the bay, with miles of shimmering sands before you when the tide is out. Trust me, this is one of the best walks in Cumbria.
In the village you will find a good selection of friendly shops such as Stewart Higginson's butchers, voted one of the best in the country, the veg shop offering a huge range of local produce and, with the baker, the general stores, chemist and deli, all combine to give you everything you need.
About a mile away lies Cartmel, one of Cumbrias finest and unique villages. With ancient buildings, an impressive medieval priory, a towering arch and a sweet clear river along with the smallest National Hunt race course, this lively village is centred on a sunny square to gather and sit, or wine and dine in one of the many inns or fine restaurants. The village is a maze of narrow streets lined by lime-washed and stone architecture, with the square entered by a bridge on one side and under a monastic arch on the other. The Priory is a magnificent building and well worth a visit to see the architecture.
For shopping there is the Cartmel Village Store in the square, and in Unsworth's Yard you have Cartmel Cheeses and The Bread Shed along with The Red Pepper & Hot Wines shop. Once a month the village holds a food market with many local producers setting up their stalls. Along with the foodie outlets there is The Larch Tree selling quailty gifts and clothing and Chamberlain’s Gifts offering a range of delightful gifts and is supplier of life size sheep and animals for Cartmel-Shepy Village.
Cartmel also has four decent pubs, The Cavendish Arms, The Royal Oak, Pig & Whistle and The Kings Arms. For something a little special you must try Simon Rogan's Michelin awarded L'Enclume, one of Cumbrias finest restaurants. Another good option is Rogan's wine bar, set by the river it is very relaxed and with excellent cuisine.
Come bank holidays the village buzzes with arrival of race day. Owned by The Holker Hall Estate the course is on the edge of the village and as well as the racing there is a carnival along with many other attractions.
About fifteen miles to the east is Kendal, south lakes main town which offers a variety of good shopping with stores, supermarkets and farmers markets, along with dining and a good cultural scene with art galleries, theatre and cinema and makes for a good day out.
About eight miles north of the village, clustered at the foot of Windermere lake, lies Newby Bridge, Lakeside and Fell Foot, the National Trusts parkland. Here you will find a couple of good inns, the Swan at Newby Bridge and, a mile further on, the Lakeside Hotel. From the latter you can hop on a steamer for a trip on the lake, which winds its way for ten miles into the central fells, passing on the way Bowness, Sawrey and finishing at the Waterhead terminus near Ambleside. At Fell Foot you can moor boats and hire row and sailing craft or simply swim and picnic by the shore. From Newby Bridge you can head north, through the Furness Fells, to explore the greater national park.
Over to the west lies Coniston Water, and in between the two great lakes is the Grizedale Forest, a day out in itself for walking or mountain biking. Beyond this lies the central massif of the Langdales for some high level walking and climbing.
Guest Reviews
The accommodation was most definitely up to the image created by the pictures and the description. The view over the bay was pretty amazing too. So thanks for creating such a lovely flat for us to see in the New Year.

Arrival very late on Friday and was pleased when we walked through the door especially when we saw the bottle of wine. The flat is lovely and very homely – we quickly settled in. Have had a very relaxing time and found the location convenient and beautiful. Found ourselves admiring the view many times. Thanks for making our stay just what we wanted and needed.
Lisa & Aidan, St Albans. 10th Sep 2010. P.S. The stick toffee pudding is definitely worth a go as mentioned many times previously."
Thank you so much for the stay in your lovely flat! We really enjoyed our visit to Grange and felt very fortunate to stay in such comfortable, stylish and well equipped accommodation. The flat was very clean and really well thought out and of course the views lived up to their reputation! Enjoyed a couple of pub meals in the Cavendish Arms in Cartmel – which also fully lived up to it’s reputation for good food, as did the local butcher for their meat, and the grocer. The only problem with our stay was that it was only a week and we could have filled a month with all the walks, drives and trips out to places of interest. Returning home with an even greater hunger for hills & views.
Louise and Pete, Kent.
What a view! And the rising sun made it quite spectacular. Trip on the train to Arnside and a walk up Arnside Knott is a great day out. Arnside has some good pubs too.

Stylish, well equipped apartment – very warm and welcoming, thanks very much for the wine too! We enjoyed the beautiful views and exploring the area. The local Chinese was OK. It was very helpful to have all the tourist info and books etc. Thank you.
Andrea, Eamonn, Harry & Peter,
We have spent a most enjoyable week in your lovely well appointed comfortable apartment. It was beautifully clean, met all our expectations and the welcome bottle of wine most appreciated. Fabulous views of the bay - gorgeous ever changing light and amazing colours. At night we watched the enchanting lights across Morecambe bay, all the way to Blackpool. Grange over Sands is a beautiful Victorian resort, with quaint shops and tea rooms. We had enjoyable walks along the promenade with breathtaking views. We really enjoyed our walk up Hampsfell across to charming Cartmel and lunch in the Cavendish. Easy access to the spectacular views and walks of the Lake District. In all great walking. We particularly enjoyed the visits to National Trust Sizergh Castle and Townend. Our stay couldn’t have been more perfect, thank you - we will be back.
