There are a number of essential elements that go into making the ideal holiday home, the right location and surrounds, the vernacular architecture, stylish and comfortable interior design, along with gardens in which to relax and good local amenities. Combined you have the perfect holiday retreat, and for me Crag Close ticks all of these boxes.
Built around 1850, Crag Close lies in the village of Glenridding, set in the lee of Helvellyn, where the houses, shops and inns sit either side of the lake road, running a few hundred yards from Ullswater's shores. The village is a popular base for visitors, offering easy access to some of our best walks, along with plenty of good pubs, cafes and shops.
At St Patrick's Pier you can hire rowing boats, small motor boats and arrange for fishing licences. The Ullswater Steamers, which run all year round, dock at Glenridding pier, close to St Patrick's, where you can board for a fantastic journey up the lake, a passage which snakes its way beneath some of the finest mountain and fell.
One of the best walks in the National Park is the trail that runs along the eastern shores of the lake. Explored from the southern end of the lake, dominated by Place Fell, St Sunday Cragg, Fairfield and Helvellyn, you take the path from Glenridding over to the east side of the water. The route takes you all the way to Sandwick and onto Howtown. You will be able to ramble all day with a magnificent view always in sight. For the return journey, board the steamboat from Howtown back to Glenridding, perfect, a whole day out, no car, but do check boat times and last sailing.
For those that like getting up high, there are some of the best mountains and fells on your doorstep, the most famous being Helvellyn and the precipitous Striding Edge. A more gentle walk is Aira Force, probably the most famous of the Lake District waterfalls. The main force falls some 70ft below a stone footbridge - so don't forget your camera.
Travel a little wider afield and you have Pooley Bridge at the northern head of the lake. A little further still brings you to Keswick, the north lakes main town set on the shores of Derwentwater. Here you have plenty of shops, cafes, pubs and supermarkets, along with visitor attractions such as market days and the famous Derwent pencil factory.
All in all you need travel little to see and experience the true flavour of the lake district, and why it is so special and popular as a holiday destination.
Crag Close
The excitement begins as you near your journeys end. Approach from the south and you skip by Lake Windermere, turning off onto the Kirkstone Pass, a 14 mile fell road that twists and rises up into high fell before descending down to Ullswater and Glenridding at the southern foot of the lake. From the north you join the lake road and journey down to the southern basin, catching views of both the water and the mountains that are to be the backdrop for your holiday. Once at the village, turn off the road, up the drive, park and let the holiday begin.
The first thing that will strike you is the architecture. The beautifully laid stone that forms the main structure, sweeps of slate roof on which sit tall chimney pots, windows with little panes of glass, many with the original thin slivers installed when the house was first built where the whole forms a perfect example of a fine Lake District house.
You enter from the side door into a small hall off which is a shower room with WC, then into the laundry and boot room. From here you step into the large kitchen dining area. Huge beams, timber units, a AGA cooker and and a long pine table combine to make this the perfect space for cooking and dining. French doors open onto the paved lower courtyard of the garden, where you can spill out on a sunny day to simply relax or dine alfresco.
From the dining space you enter the first sitting room. A comfortable sofa and two arm chairs are drawn around a roaring log burning fire. The panelled windows reveals are deep allowing sunlight to filter into the room. The overall decor is gentle and muted, perfect as a space to tuck up with a good read.
In the centre of the house is the main hall and stairs off which lies the second sitting room, equally well furnished with plump sofa and chairs, another log burning stove and a wide screen TV to take in the latest block buster.
The stairs wind up to the landing and passageways. Here you have two double king size bedrooms, both delightfully furnished and comfortable. There is a further twin bedded room and finally the bunk bedroom. Also on this floor there are two bathrooms, one has a bath with overhead shower, basin and WC, the other a bath with a hand held shower, basin and WC.
Out side the grounds are beautiful. From the kitchen - dining room you step out onto the lower terrace, paved with huge stone flags, softened with bushes and shrubs, and furnished with a large table and garden chairs along with a good barbecue and chimenea. Rising up and around the courtyard are steep terraces of rock and grass, where from the top level you have a perfect view of the lake.
I really love this house, where it offers everything for the perfect lakeland holiday. Foremost the style and level of comfort make it a place to holiday at, a place to simply relax. For entertainment there is good audio and TV, along with a host of board games and a good selection of books. Come summer the gardens extend the space, where glimpses of the lake add to the pleasure. As a base it has everything you need at hand, from shopping to dining, walking and activities, all are on your doorstep, and I am sure that all who stay will enjoy this very special home set in the very heart of Cumbria's National Park.
