Dining Out

Dining Out - Whilst staying in one of our Lake District Cottages and Cumbrian Self Catering Holiday Cottgaes you will want to sample some of the culinary delights on offer throughout Cumbria.

Clare and I have been to a few good restaurants this month which you may like to give a go.

18TH June - En famille we went to the Strickland Arms at Sizergh, a lovely old inn which sits just outside of the gates to Sizergh Castle - me thinks here an opportunity for booze and culture. The food was, as always, very good along with excellent real ale and a fine wine list. So good the inn is recommended in the Michelin Pub Guide and the Good Pub Guide for the last four years, also recommended in the Good Beer Guide for 2009 and 2010.

The Last time Clare and I went was back in March and was lucky to coincide with one of the event nights where guitarist John Harper was playing to the crowd. If you like a little entertainment with your dinner then check out their website for upcoming live events, also quiz nights - all comers welcome.

11th June 2010 - Friday night and we decided to show the kids where the pizzas were and nip over to Cartmel. Our normal watering hole is Rogan,s but gave the revamped Kings Arms a go. Good beer, wine and very well presented food.

And for lunch.... If you are in Kendal, shopping or checking out the galleries and museums then a great place for lunch is The Artisan below Booths in Elephant Yard. Juicy salads, pate platter and the best cod and chips there is something for everybody. After you can shop in Booths or Artisan for goodies to take bake to your Lake District Cottage. You will find cheese from London's Neal's Yard, our local best bread, Staff of Life and loads more, all this along with an ever changing exhibition of local artists.

5th June 2010 - First off was the Bridge Street Restaurant in Kendal. Having noted many great reviews we thought time to give it a go. Well it met all expectation both food and service. I had the slow roasted pork belly, marinated in garlic and rosemary, Clare had filets of bream with spinach and a green herb salsa, this followed by a good old fashioned rhubarb crumble for me, and lemon brulee for the good lady wife, who bless her, did the driving so I topped it off with coffee and a large armagnac and then another......

You need not take just my word for the delights of The Bridge have a look at some reviews below -

Nobody It Better "We are regular users of Tripadvisor & tried the entire top three in May 2010. Bridge Street came out top spot on all counts. The venue shouts class from start to finish & is what I would consider a “proper restaurant” Service was attentive, without being intrusive, ambience was perfect, food was fabulous & believe it all not it was stunning value for money, not something would expect from such a top class restaurant. We ate the full menu: three courses, wine, including a dessert wine & coffee all for less than £40 per head. Fabulous, if you have only one choice-this is the one."

A Gem"We visited Kendal on Friday 9th April 2010 and dined at Bridge Street resturant. The roadworks in the area and the strange Kendal one way system meant that the resturant was seen quite a few minutes before we arrived. With Kendal town on the other side of the bridge, the resturant has a great feel of sitting back and looking at the history of the town although there is undoubtedly many stories to be told by the walls of this fine building. The bar on the ground floor was relaxing and well stocked. The staff attentive and professional throughout. The resturant on the first floor was small although we were told there are other rooms available for dining. The food was delivered in a timely manner by the great staff and every dish was praised. There is a strong inclusion of local produce which was cooked to perfection. Thanks for a great night."

You know - they could be right.
