Townson Ground lies at the north east head of Coniston Water, a group of six adjoining, individually owned houses and cottages.

The village of Coniston lies about a mile and half around the lake, offering shops, cafes and a number of good pubs serving locally brewed ale.

From the village, tracks lead up through the old coppermines valley and to the foot of Coniston Old Man, where the hearty can make an attempt to the 2635 ft summit and view never to be forgotten.

At the boating centre you can hire rowing, sailing and little electric power boats, setting off to explore the shoreline and bays.

Townson Ground House

The history of the house dates back to 1547 when the house was first built by the monks of Furness Abbey and much of the original structure remains, with later Victorian additions.

From a sunny private garden to the front of the house you enter into the sitting room. Light streams through sash windows, where to one end is an open fire and the other a log burning stove, with sofas and chairs drawn around each, giving a cosy space to relax. From here you step down into the dining room, the long table ideal for grand meals and dinner conversation.

A corridor connects both sitting, dining and kitchen with a small lobby for hats coats and boots. The kitchen, with under floor heating is large and practical, designed for catering for large parties.

From the sitting - room stairs lead up and divide to the bedroom floors. There are a mix of double, twin and bunk bedded rooms and though not all large, all are comfortable, most with en -suite bath or shower rooms, save
the bunk rooms which share a common small shower with basin and WC.

Guests who are resident in the house have been extended use of the private lake frontage owned by the nearby Tent Lodge Estate. Here you will find 800 yards of shoreline along with three jetties, where guests may moor their boats - please see details below.

The combination of a fine house, perfect location and lakeside fun make Townson Ground ideal to gather your family or friends for reunion and celebration.
