Grange over Sands lies twelve miles south from the foot of Windermere, on the Cartmel Peninsula, overlooking the Morecambe Bay.
The village is one of my favourites, but as I live here, perhaps I am a little bias. A long time favourite as a lakes come coastal destination, it was popularised during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, partly due to the so called micro climate we seem to have here. Indeed where else would you find palm trees in little gardens in Cumbria.
Renowned for the view across the bay, it is a vista to rival any of the nearby lakes. For a gentle stroll there is the long promenade edging the bay, or go up onto Hampsfell, with its natural lime stone pavement and surrounding woodland, to be rewarded with a panoramic view of both bay and the Lakeland mountains.
For one of the best walks, drive around the head of the bay, or catch the little train across to Arnside. From here you can walk along the edge of the bay, with miles of shimmering sands before you when the tide is out. Trust me, this is one of the best walks in Cumbria.
In the village you will find a good selection of friendly shops such as Stewart Higginson's butchers, voted one of the best in the country, the veg shop offering a huge range of local produce and, with the baker, the general stores, chemist and deli, all combine to give you everything you need.
For wining and dining there are a few pubs, a lot of cafes and plenty of hotels with bars and restaurants. For an even wider choice, and a must to visit, is the nearby village of Cartmel. About a mile over the fell, this little village offers four good pubs, along with The Enclume restaurant and the newly opened Rogan's wine bar. Both are owned and run by Simon Rogan, internationally renowned for fine innovative cuisine and highly recommended.
The Rowans is a large apartment, covering the ground and lower floor of a former fine Victorian house. Set a short distance from the center of the village on the fell road, you can walk down for the shops and bay, or up onto the fell.
From the private front garden you enter into a wide hall. Here you have a generous sitting room with huge, plump sofas set around a log burning stove. Adjoining the sitting room is the dining room. Large and quite contemporary, it will make the perfect setting for long dinners late into the night.
The kitchen lies off the hall and is very well equipped, right down to a built in coffee machine for your after dinner espresso.
Finally on the ground floor is the first double bedroom, along with the shower room, with wet room style shower, basin and WC.
Down to the basement level where you have a choice of two bedrooms. One a twin the other a double. Both have a very nice feel and share a super bathroom.
To the front is the little garden. Surrounded by hedges and trees it is quite private, offers a glimpse of the bay, and will be perfect for a barbecue or pre dinner drink.
All in all The Rowans will be perfect for families, friends or just a couple who want something a little different. There is much to do and see, both nearby and far and I am sure all who stay will have a delightful holiday experience.
